Canada loves Veneto’s sparking white wine

Prosecco is flying in the land of maple leaf

Over the last ten years, Canada has become highly selective with regard to its choice and evaluation of wines. As with other countries located in the most northern parts of the world, the market in Canada is not free, but managed by a monopoly which refers to the various federal states and which controls the buying, distribution and sale of all alcoholic products. This filter on products entering the country has meant that over the years Canadians have refined their taste, which has settled at a medium to high quality standard. Thus, their wine choice could not fail to include Veneto’s sparking white wine:  although 54% of the sparkling wines consumed in Canada are produced locally, a staggering 32% is represented by Prosecco, the pièce de résistance of Italy’s sparkling wine industry.

Prosecco sales in Canada up 500%

For some years now, browsing the aisles of a Canadian Liquor Store is alike to walking among the vineyards in the Treviso province, with many of the local labels on show. But why is this so? Thanks to a series of initiatives organised by the Consortium of DOC wines and the local chamber of commerce, a real fashion for Prosecco has taken off, especially in the Québec area where the increase in sales of Prosecco DOC has reached almost 500%. In this city, formal receptions and festive gatherings are an important part of life and everyone loves to toast with bubbles. Prosecco DOC offers the right compromise between quality and price, a feature that has helped fuel its rise to the top of the consumption rankings.

With what are the Canadians serving prosecco?

Prosecco DOC is certainly much appreciated as the drink of choice during formal get-togethers, celebrations and parties – whether drunk alone or used by renowned bar tenders for the creation of refined cocktails. With regards to its culinary accompaniment, on the other hand, this sparkling wine from Veneto is often served alongside lobster and salmon. Indeed, prosecco, especially DOC, is perfect for serving with many varieties of fish. The Canadians have unquestionably embraced prosecco, serving it alongside their traditional local dishes as well as for accompanying meals in general.
